Subject: Call for Participants: Perceptions of Humor in Brazilian Portuguese (Non-Brazilian Speakers)


Can you truly "get" a joke in a language that isn't your own?
I am an undergraduate researcher in Linguistics at UNICAMP, Institute
of Language Studies (IEL), Brazil, conducting a pilot study on how
non-Brazilian speakers of Portuguese interpret humor in Brazilian
multimodal materials (comics, memes, and short cartoons).
I am looking for participants who meet the following criteria:
- 18 years or older, with active university affiliation;
- either a learner of Brazilian Portuguese as a second language (any
L1, any proficiency level) or a native speaker of another variety of
Portuguese (e.g., European, Mozambican, Angolan);
- no exposure to Brazilian Portuguese or Brazilian culture during
early childhood (ages 0–6);
- no diagnosed condition that would compromise comprehension of short
images or texts.
The study consists of an online experimental questionnaire in which
participants view 12 brief multimodal items and answer a short set of
questions about each one (whether the item is intended to be humorous,
how funny it is perceived to be, and a brief explanation of why). It
takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is completely anonymous;
instructions are provided in Portuguese, and all responses will be
used exclusively for academic purposes.
