Call for chapters:
The volume "Revisiting virtual breathing spaces for speakers of
minoritized languages" aims to introduce the revised framework and
operationalisation of virtual breathing spaces and offer accounts that
explore how virtual breathing spaces work (or don’t work) in different
contexts. We are looking for contributions that explore the concept of
virtual breathing space in a range of different minoritized contexts.
If you are interested in contributing, please send an abstract and a
working title to the editors by October 15th, 2026.
Background:
In 2019, we (the editors) put forward a framework for analysing how
virtual communities may act as breathing spaces for users of
minoritised languages. By virtual communities, we refer to a) your
"friends" or profiles you follow online; b) a group/server you are
part of (open or closed); c) a set of interactions around a hashtag
(Belmar & Glass 2019; Belmar 2021).
The original application (Belmar & Glass 2019) brought together
concepts of language revitalisation and maintenance, language policiy,
and the concepts of computer mediated communication as a way to
highlight the place minoritised languages have in modernity. Since the
initial launch, the concept has gained more traction than we could
have ever expected, being used in discussions of topics such as:
- Language vitality
- Language revitalization and maintenance
- Language practices and ideologies
- Language and identity
- Media and language education
- Language justice (particularly during COVID-19)
These applications, as well as private conversations we have had
together with many colleagues, have given new shape to the concept and
operationalisation of the framework for virtual breathing spaces.
The present volume comes after years of behind the scenes work
revising the original virtual communities as breathing spaces
framework, and is a direct result of the current COST Action
PLURILINGMEDIA, particularly the general conference that took place in
Warsaw in December 2025.
