SUMMARY
Context :
Traditionnaly, terminologies or thesauri gather the vocabulary used in
the language of a domain of speciality. The aim is to have a list of
the terms but also to structure this list by adding relations between
terms and grouping terms in classes. These relationships bring various
informations either morphological, syntactical or semantic. An entry
can be associated to different terms:
- generic or specific term,
- synonym term,
- antonym,
- term variants which are prefered or must be avoid.
These relations make a terminological network out of the terms list.
This one-day workshop will take an interest in the terminology
structuring. Natural Language Processus and computational terminology
can be used to acquire several types of information useful to
structure a terminology :
- Relations between terms : morpho-syntactic variants (Jacquemin
1997), hyperonymy relations (Morin 1999, Séguéla 1999), synonymy
relations (Hamon and Nazarenko 2000), causality relations (Garcia
1998), etc. ;
- Similarity between words (Faure et Nédellec 1998,
Nazarenko et al. 1997), terms classes (Assadi 1998) and semantic
tagging (Basili et al. 1997, Cerbah 2000).
End-user applications and texts must be taken into account in the
building of a terminology. (Bourigault and Slodzian 1999) observe that
these is not a single terminology in a domain of speciality but
various application-dependant terminologies. To help
terminologists in their task, it is more important to develop NLP tools
rather than resources that would be used for corpora processing
independently of any application. It follows that besides the
precision of the results, the evaluation of NLP tools designed for the
terminology building must take into account the application context
and the human-machine collaboration process.
Aims :
Up to now, research leads to develop tools which focus on specific
acquisition tools without taking into account the whole process of
terminology building. Results of various tools are rarely re-used by
others. This one-day workshop aims to confront the various approaches
in terminology structuring and to identify the emerging
challenge. Several questions should be considered :
- Which consequences can be draw up from the experiments carried out
so far?
- Which relations are relevant in terminologies?
- How to acquire these relations?
- Which resources and which tools can be used?
- How to integrate automatically acquired knowkedge in the work of
the terminologist?
- How to evaluate NLP tools for terminology?
Communications will be available on the ATALA web site. According to
the interest for this workshop, we will consider the publication of
extended papers in a revue.
Keywords : terminology building process, terminological relations,
terms similarity, semantic classes, evaluation.

PRESENTATION
Contexte :
Traditionnellement, une terminologie ou un thesaurus rassemble le
vocabulaire utilisé dans la langue d'un domaine de spécialité. Mais
une liste de termes n'est pas suffisante. Il faut aussi structurer
cette liste en ajoutant des relations entre les termes et en
regroupant les termes dans des classes. Ces relations apportent
différentes informations : un terme peut être associé à un terme
générique ou spécifique, à un terme synonyme, à des antonymes, à des
variantes dont l'usage est préféré ou, au contraire, déconseillé,
etc. Ces renvois d'une entrée à l'autre constituent autant de
relations morphologiques, syntaxiques ou sémantiques qui forment un
réseau terminologique.
Cette journée portera sur la structuration de terminologie. Le
Traitement Automatique des Langues et la terminologie computationnelle
permettent l'acquisition de plusieurs types d'informations nécessaires
à la structuration d'une terminologie :
- Relations entre les termes : des variantes morpho-syntaxiques
(Jacquemin 1997), des relations d'hyperonymie (Morin 1999,
Séguéla 1999), des relations de synonymie (Hamon et Nazarenko 2000),
des relations de causalité (Garcia 1998), etc. ;
- Similarites entre mots (Faure et Nédellec 1998,
Nazarenko et al. 1997), classes de termes (Assadi 1998), étiquetage
sémantique (Basili et al. 1997, Cerbah 2000).
L'application finale et le texte jouent un rôle important lors de la
constitution d'une terminologie. (Bourigault et Slodzian 1999) ont
constaté qu'il n'existe pas une terminologie unique pour un domaine de
spécialité mais que les terminologies dépendent de l'application. Il
apparaît donc de plus en plus important de développer des outils de
TAL qui assisteront les terminologues dans leur tâche, plutôt que des
ressources exploitables sur plusieurs corpus indépendemment des
applications.
Ce changement de point de vue sur l'apport du TAL à la constitution de
terminologies amène à revoir les modalités d'évaluation. Celle-ci doit
prendre en compte l'application et l'aide apportée et non simplement
la précision de résultats.
Objectifs :
Jusqu'ici, les travaux sont restés assez dispersés et l'intégration de
différents outils dans une même chaîne de traitement est rare. Leur
apport reste difficile à apprécier. Cette journée d'étude permettra de
faire le point sur les approches en structuration de terminologie et
d'aborder les problèmes liés à l'évaluation des outils d'aide aux
terminologues. Plusieurs questions pourront être abordées :
- Quel bilan peut-on tirer des expériences réalisées jusqu'à présent ?
- Quelles sont les relations pertinentes en terminologie ?
- Comment acquérir ces relations ?
- Quelles ressources et quels outils peuvent être utilisés ?
- Comment intégrer des connaissances acquises automatiquement dans
le travail du terminologue ?
- Comment évaluer les outils terminologiques ?
Les communications seront disponibles sur le site de l'ATALA. En
fonction de l'intérêt suscité par cette journée, nous envisagerons de
publier ces travaux dans une revue.
