                             BULAG N° 31

                              ETYMOLOGY

The Problem

According to its own definition, etymology is that discipline of
linguistics which studies the origins of the meaning of a word and its
evolution through time. How far back, with its help, can we go in
terms of the knowledge of this meaning? What can etymology teach us
concerning languages, their roots, and may be their origins? Can it
allow us, with the aid of other disciplines, linguistic, social,
biological, anatomical, anthropological, cultural or other, to return
to the ultimate origins of the words of languages? What is the limit
beyond which our knowledge of the origin of a word cannot be pursued
further, and where is this limit?
