Rethinking Contact Induced Change

Celebrating the transfer of the online Journal of Language Contact to
Brill publishers in Leiden (see http://www.jlc-journal.org/) this
conference is sponsored by Brill, on request of the founding editor of
the Journal, Robert Nicolaï. The conference can be seen as the
follow-up to the 2007 symposium in Leipzig, see :

This conference addresses a number of fundamental questions in the
domain of contact-induced change that have emerged from the debate in
the last decades and also aims to formulate new questions. Robert
Nicolaï, the founding father of the Journal of Language Contact, will
present his thoughts on « La place de la dimension sémiotique dans le
contact des langues (construction des signes et place des acteurs de
la communication : vers une anthropologie renouvelée). »

We aim at contributions that assess the main issues based on empirical
data, but with a wider view of the theoretical consequences of these
data, and specifically invite abstracts for proposed papers or posters
on the following issues:

- Is there a difference in output of contact-induced change in
  language maintenance situations and in language shift situations?

- Do mixed languages, creoles, and metatypized languages (in the
  definition of Malcolm Ross) reflect essentially different histories
  of language contact than other languages, or do they constitute the
  edges of a continuum?

- To what extent do structural differences and similarities between
  the languages in contact shape the way they influence each other?

The conference will take place over two and a half days, namely
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning, and in line with the aim to
address and discuss the fundamental issues we will not have parallel
sessions. Papers will be selected on the basis of anonymous
abstracts. Presentations are twenty minutes with an additional ten
minutes for discussion. In addition we have an option of poster
presentation. Poster presenters will be given the possibility to
introduce their poster for 3 minutes during a plenary
session. Prospective presenters can opt for a paper or poster or
paper/poster presentation. The last category is for those who are
interested in doing a poster in case their abstract for a paper is not
accepted. Abstracts should be in by November 30, 2010 and notification
will be sent out before January 31, 2011. Selections of abstracts is
done by the organizing/scientific committee.

The conference languages are English and French.

How to submit an abstract:

Send your (anonymous) title and abstract as an email attachment to:
RCIC at hum.leidenuniv.nl

Subject header: (your last name) RCIC abstract

Please include the following in the body of the email:

-Author's name(s)

-Abstract title

-Contact information: email, phone, fax

Abstract specifications:

Maximum length: 500 words or 1 single-spaced page

Format: If possible .pdf.

Language: English or French.

Put the following information at the top of your abstract:

-Title

-Category: oral; poster; either oral or poster (please choose)

-Name: Give a filename similar to the subject header

Anonymity: Abstracts must be anonymous. Do not put your name or other
identifying information on the abstract. Also, please anonymize your
file by removing identifying information. Usually this can be done
using the following two pull-down menus:

File > document properties > description (remove name of author)

View > comments (though an abstract is unlikely to have comments,
check this and remove any comments, as they will show your username)

View > review tracker (ditto)

You might also check:

Acrobat > preferences > identity (to keep your identity off the .pdf,
leave all fields blank).

Categories of submission:

1) Individual oral presentation (single- or multiple-author): 20
minutes + 10 minutes for discussion.

2) Poster: One or more poster sessions will be organized, depending on
demand.

3) Oral or poster: This means you prefer an oral presentation but
would also be willing instead to do a poster. If there are more good
abstracts than we can accommodate, a Program Committee will schedule
some as posters. If you choose either the "poster" or "oral or poster"
category, you will increase your chances of acceptance.

Contact et changement linguistique : nouvelles approches ?

Sur proposition de Robert Nicolaï, fondateur de Journal of Language
Contact (http://www.jlc-journal.org/) ce Symposium, parrainé par les
Editions Brill de Leiden, marquera la reprise du Journal par cet
éditeur international. Il fera ainsi suite au Symposium “Language
Contact and the Dynamics of Language: Theory and Implications”
organisé à Leipzig en 2007, voir :

Ce symposium abordera un certain nombre de questions fondamentales qui
ont été soulevées au cours des débats conduits ces dernières décennies
dans le domaine de la recherche sur les changements linguistiques
induits par le contact. Il visera également à formuler de nouvelles
questions. Robert Nicolaï, fondateur du Journal of Language Contact
présentera ses réflexions sur « La place de la dimension sémiotique
dans le contact des langues (construction des signes et place des
acteurs de la communication : vers une anthropologie renouvelée). »

Nous attendons des propositions de communication qui s'appuient sur
des données empiriques mais qui conduisent à des questionnements
théoriques. Nous souhaitons tout particulièrement qu'elles portent sur
les questions suivantes :

- L'influence / l'impact du contact des langues sur le changement
  linguistique est-il le même dans des situations de maintenance
  linguistique que dans celles où s'opère un changement de langue ?

- Les langues mixtes, les créoles et les langues “métatypisées” (au
  sens de Malcolm Ross) traduisent-elles des histoires essentiellement
  différentes de contacts de langues ou bien constituent-elles les
  limites de ce qui pourrait être analysé comme un continuum ?

- Dans quelle mesure les différences structurelles, ou, au contraire,
  les similitudes (formelles) entre les langues prédéterminent la
  façon dont elles vont s'influencer ?

Le Symposium se tiendra du jeudi 9 juin au samedi 11 juin midi (deux
jours et demi) . En raison de notre souhait de privilégier la
discussion collective portant sur des questions de fond, il n'y aura
pas de sessions parallèles. Les communications seront sélectionnées à
partir des résumés anonymes qui seront fournis. Les
interventions/communications ne dépasseront pas 20 minutes. Elles
seront suivies de dix minutes de discussion.

Des présentations par affiche/posters sont aussi envisagées et les
présentateurs auront la possibilité d'introduire rapidement (3
minutes) leur thème lors d'une session prévue à cet effet. Les auteurs
pourront choisir de proposer soit une communication, soit une affiche,
soit une communication/affiche, cette dernière catégorie concerne ceux
qui souhaiteraient présenter une affiche au cas où leur projet de
communication ne serait pas retenu. Les résumés devront nous parvenir
avant le 30 novembre 2010 et la décision prise sera envoyée avant le
31 janvier 2011. La sélection des communications sera faite par le
Comité scientifique du Symposium.

Les langues de travail du Symposium sont l'anglais et le français.

Placez les informations suivantes en en-tête de votre résumé :

Titre

Catégorie: communication orale ; affiche ; ou communication/affiche (
choisissez une catégorie SVP).

Nom: donnez à votre fichier un nom similaire à celui que vous
mentionnez dans le champ ‘Objet' de votre courriel.

Anonymat: les résumés doivent être anonymes. Ne mettez dans votre
résumé ni votre nom ni aucune autre information susceptible de vous
identifier.

Anonymez aussi votre fichier informatique en supprimant les
informations susceptibles de vous identifier. En principe cela se fait
en utilisant les deux menus déroulants:

Fichier > Propriétés > description / Résumé (supprimer le nom de
l'auteur et éventuellement son affiliation institutionnelle).

Insertion > commentaires (bien qu'il soit improbable qu'un résumé soit
pourvu de commentaires, cette rubrique mentionne votre nom).

Insertion > suivi des révisions (idem).

Vous devez aussi cocher:

Acrobat > preferences > pour supprimer votre identité dans le document
.pdf : laissez vides tous les champs.

Types de soumission:

1) présentation orale individuelle (auteur unique ou non) : 20 minutes
+ 10 minutes pour la discussion.

2) Affiche: une ou plusieurs sessions d'affichage seront organisées
selon la demande.

3) Communication/affiche :

Ce choix signifie que vous préférez une présentation orale mais que
vous pourriez envisager de faire une présentation par affiche si la
présentation orale ne pouvait pas être retenue.

S'il y a plus de bons résumés qu'il ne nous est possible d'accepter
pour les présentations orales, un comité de programme en programmera
un certain nombre sous forme d'affiches. Par conséquent, si vous
choisissez la catégorie ‘communication/affiche', vous augmentez vos
chances d'acceptation.
