Subject: Events
Dear Lowlanders,
The Pommerscher Verein of Central Wisconsin, in cooperation with the
Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies in Madison, Wisconsin,
will be hosting the "1999 Plattd{u"}{u"}tsch Konferenz: One Language,
Many Colors" October 21-24 in Wausau, Wisconsin, USA. I have seen the
program, and it looks very interesting and promising, with a good
number of speakers. This event is of particular interest to those who
would like to find out more about the Low Saxon (Low German) language
in North America.
For detailed information, including information about accommodation,
please contact the publicity director, Carol Kleinschmidt
(<cjklein at pcpros.net>, 246 County Road, Hamburg, WI 54411, USA, Tel.
715.536.2633).
I am seriously considering participating, but there may be logistic
problems.
Best regards,
Reinhard/Ron
P.S.: Not to say anything detrimental about the value of the work of
these good folks and all others who so diligently fend for the
preservation of the Low Saxon language in North America, I wonder what
it takes to make them stop using clubby names like "Plattd{u"}{u"}tsch"
and "Plattdeutsch" in English. The English names are "Low Saxon" and
"Low German," of which the former is all inclusive (and genealogically
speaking more accurate) and the latter alienates the 1.5-2 million
speakers in the Eastern Netherlands who are not ethnically German but
use the same language, a language that has at long last been officially
recognized in Germany, the Netherlands and the EU and thus is now
officially not a part of German.
