Subject: Names

I have been cleaning up my old volumes of "Vlaamse Stam", the genealogical
magazine for Northern Belgium. While tearing out the few articles that
interest me particulary, I have withhold a few relating to particular names
of persons.

1. F. Debrabandere: De familienaam Kinsabil - Key(n)sabyl, p. 360 in one of
the volumes.

In 1987 "Kinsdabil" was occuring for 102 families in West Flanders and 42 in
East Flanders
Related to the French "Quinzebilles", occuring in the Rijsel (Lille) area in
France.
"bille" in old French: piece of money, from the old Franconian "bikkil"
Flemish "honderd ballen": hundred Belgian francs.
Fifteen is still a magical number in some ballgames (tennis e.g.),
cf. also the German surname "Fünfzehnschilling", related, as to
Bredenbacher, to an old taxation system.
cf. also other surnames: Fünfschilling, Fünfheller, Fünfpfund, Fünfpfennig,
Fünfmark, Fünfstück, Hondermarck, Dryepond, Tienpond, Dislivres, Vingtlivres
etc.

(I guess names like Tienpond could also relate to a baby, found without
indication of a name, weighing 10 pound)

2. J.G. Debrouwere: Hertogin IN niet VAN Beieren - Waarom?, p. 379 in one of
the volumes.

The former Belgian queen Elisabeth, from the Wittelsbach family, was titled
"Duchess IN Bavaria" and not "Duchess OF Bavaria". The IN rather than the OF
is applied in the Wittelsbach family since 1799 (since "Willem, graaf van
Birchenfeld te Geinhausen")

I have often problems in High German for choosing between ZU, VON, IN: for
e.g. Statsarchiv IN Wien, ZU Wien, VON Wien?

3. M. Douyrou: De Basqueville's van Hulst tot Bayonne, VS 27, 11-12, Nov-Dec
91, p. 496-498.

De Basqueville is not only occuring in a Sherlock Holmes story, but is also
a name occuring in Flanders.
The original name of the Basqueville family was "Martel". Basqueville was a
smalle territory in the Caux area in the French Normandie. The family had to
escape to England and Holland because of religious persecution.

4. H. Sprangers, Bijdrage tot de kwartierstraat van Ludwig van Beethoven, VS
31, 11-12, Nov.-Dec.95

5. J. De Viendt, Onze kwartierstaat, Pierre-Chrétien De Geyter, Schepper van
de Internalionale, VS 25, 7-8, Jul-Aug 1989, p. 369-380.

De Geyter (1848 Ghent - St-Denis 1932) wrote the music for the socialist
"internationale" song. I thought the song once also was the national anthem
of the Soviet Union. (Flemish music!!!)
