Weel, in LAS 3 for Tranent an Elphinstone, at I mynd ye sayin wis nearhaund
yer ain speak, thay hae an upside-doun _v_ (SAMPA [V]) in words like _cut_,
an a script _a_ (SAMPA [A]) in words like _fat_. This wad mean at the vowel
in 'but' is closer nor the ane in 'fat'. Thay dinna shaw onie differ i the
lenth. I dinna ken if the extra syllable in 'batter' an 'butter' micht mak
a differ.
I suppose at, gin the war a differ baith in lenth an quality, ane or the
ither wad be eneuch ti represent the differ phonemically. I dae the like wi
vowel lenth in Shetlandic - e.g. /a/ an /a:/ - e'en tho the soonds in some
environments micht be e.g. [a.] an [A.], or in some airts [a] an [Q.]; but
I haud at Shetlandic haes underlyin phonological vowel lenth. I wad hae
thocht, tho, at wi vowel lenth bein thocht no ti be phonemic in maist kynds
o Scots (SVLR an aa that) at length wadna be the first chyce for
representin phonemic differs in Scots.
John M. Tait.
