I must differ a little bit about what a bayou is, having grown up in bayou
country. A bayou is a slow moving stream, with  a very gentle current, although
it can be wide and deep. Bayou St. John, in New Orleans, at one time was able to

accomodate early ocean-going ships in the days when it was difficult to navigate

up the mouth of the Mississippi.

In the area of southern Louisiana and along the Texas coast there are a lot of
bayous.  In parts of Louisiana, the bayous became the roadways between areas
because the marsh and swamp made overland travel very difficult.  The bayous
fulfilled this need  because they were not marsh or swamp.
