Reinhard,

Thank you.  Yes, I had read that Gothic was the oldest form of German (what a
misstatement, eh?).  I had also learnt in European History classes that the
Goths
stormed across the east and the south of Europe.  This had caused quite a bit of

confusion and I thank you for clarifying that.  I had assumed that a band of
Visigoths had strayed into Germany at some point and were quickly
"teutonicized",
but now we see that this was not the case.

Ethan may like to know that I've recently completed a Gothic course (not that I
got a particularly good mark for it!) and should feel free to contact me
privately for any more info.

Gothic is, as Ron says, a very useful language for finding out about the history
of Germanic languages (including Lowlands ones), but my own view is that it is
rather over-used bearing in mind it is not a direct relative of any living
Germanic language.
