Duden has MHG "schemel", OHG "scamil", OE "scamol" from LL. "scamillus",
"scamellum", "small bench" (L. "scamnum" = "bench", as you said). Original
meaning in German "footstool".
I think you may have already answered the question "Why b -> m?"
May I sneak in a Latin-derived word I heard in the supermarket today?
