Subject: LL-L: "Etymology" LOWLANDS-L, 20.OCT.1999 (06) [E]

Ron,

I very vaguely remember something in one of my linguistics classes something
about the initial _n_ on words such as German "Nacht" not actually being
there in Proto-Indo-European, in which case "ochtend" would simply be
"night-end". But I can't for the life of me remember exactly how that
worked. I'll contact my tutor again about it.

I have no idea about the English "-ing", tho' it certainly isn't present in
Ulster-Scots, which usually divides simply between "moarn" (the period
before about 2pm) and the "een" (the period after 2pm). A common translation
for English "evening" specifically would be "foersupper", i.e. the period
just before "supper" (taken at about 10pm).

Ulster-Scots also has the expressions "laich twal" (12 midnight) and "heich
twal" (12 noon), literally "low" and "high twelve". Are these known
elsewhere?

Regards,
