1. Today the "Belang van Limburg" announces a new (political) book about
the Limburgish Language:
Jan Dries, Erkenning van de Limburgse taal, 86 pp (in Dutch)
some quotes:

"Het is ongehoord dat de regering weigert het Europees Handvest voor
Streek- en Minderheidstalen te ondertekenen, waardoor de Limburgse taal
niet kan worden erkend. De oorzaak hiervan is een structureel probleem dat
alles met het Vlaamse superioriteitsgevoel te maken heeft", dat stelt
Genkenaar Jan Dries in zijn nieuwste boek over de Limburgse taal.
Ik ben bijzonder ontgoocheld dat de Limburgse taal niet als officiële
streektaal wordt erkend, terwijl dezelfde taal in Nederlands Limburg dat al
sinds 1996 is.
... De diepere oorzaak van de niet-erkenning is een structureel probleem
dat steunt op de totale vervlaamsing van de Nederlandse gemeenschap. Een
aantal politici wil maar niet beseffen dat Vlaanderen bestaat uit
Vlamingen, Brabanders en Limburgers, drie bevolkingsgroepen met een eigen
streektaal.
... Vooreerst moet een andere naam gezocht worden voor Vlaanderen...
... er moet een standaard schrijfwijze komen voor de Limburgse taal...

Some comments: Vlaanderen lended it's name for the North of this country.
But it is not correct that the "old" Vlaanderen dominates the North
linguistically. Virtually all typical Belgian elements in Belgian Dutch are
lended from Brabantish dialects from the Antwerp-Mechelen area, that also
form the basic for channel-TV soap.

People who want to publish their books in Limburgish in the Netherlands use
the Limburgish Veldeke spelling. (Jan G. M. Notten, Aanwijzingen voor de
spelling van de Limburgse dialecten, 1983, Veldeke, 36 pp.)This orthography
offers no way though for the spelling of nasalized vowels that frequently
occur in Limburgish "Haspengouw".

2. De Standaard of today spends a whole page of a "Brussels" supplement to
an exhibition about the Franch language "Tu parles! Le Français dans tous
ses états", Brussels, Espace Méredien, Sept. 21 - Dec. 31.

The comments by the organizator, Benoît Peeters, illustrate a new change in
French linguistic politics. No longer tending to conquer the last 10 perc.
Dutch speaking people in Brussels, but an invitation to all to join for a
common battle against English in Brussels.

3. Read today: the French are not only in the defensive in Brussels, in
Québec the linguistic battle has no end in sight:

Les audiences publiques sur le français débutent le1er novembre
La Commission des états généraux sur la langue française tiendra des
audiences publiques du 1er novembre à la mi-décembre dans toutes les
régions du Québec. Dans un mois, la commission présidée par Gérald
Larose, publiera un document d'orientation pour lancer le débat sur la
situation et l'avenir du français.
Puis, les citoyens et les groupes intéressés auront jusqu'au 23 octobre
pour rédiger un mémoire. Au début de 2001, la Commission tiendra des
colloques sur des sujets comme la démographie et les nouvelles
technologies avant la tenue d'assises nationales en mars.
La Commission sera présidée par Gérald Larose.
