I haven't really been following this thread, so maybe this will be off the
mark a bit. I thought it was odd having 'how' mean 'why' but then I realized
it's probably the same as "how come" which means 'why'.
For example: "Hey! How come he got more coffee than me!?" Is this a
related phrase? Is it used in the U.K.? The only sense I can make of it is
that it's like saying "HOW did this COME to be?" = "What cause created this
effect?" = "Why did this happen?".
