You never know what slips in in a caranaval gazetteer -it may include some
jokes - but this kind of namegiving is just standard in Limburg.

For my little municipality alone (of __Vliermaal_, Limburg) I know of at
least one master degree paper on the subject:

Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven
Faculteit van Wijsbegeerte en Letteren
Jos Leyssen
Nominale patronen met moderne persoonsnamen in het dialect van
__Vliermaal__.
Verhandeling aangeboden tot het bekomen van de graad van Licenciaat in de
Wijsbegeerte, groep E Germaanse Filologie
September 1970, 102 pp

It's a complex rulesetting he found, too complex to summarize here.

It's not exclusively patronomical,
as e.g. (from Vliermaal):

Suzann van de klik
Jef van de kappuin
Willem van de veldhin
Frenske van de poos
Guus van de berg
Hemke van de bron
