Subject: Language planning

A small point, triggered by Matt's comment on university-speak. I've
recently come across the term "extension" in both British and US contexts.
In Britain "extension" refers to the provision of educational services to
persons who are not regular students of the university, while in the USA it
seems to refer to the provision of practical advice to farmers and (probably
more recently) to small businesses. Do I have this right?

There may be some variation with regard to the use of "extension" in higher
education in North America.  Where I am (in the US part of the Pacific
Northwest), "(university) extension" is apparently used in the way it is used
in Britain: an offshoot, usually self-sustaining, of a university, offering
courses to persons who are not regular students of the respective university.
