[English version follows.]
Leve Leeglanners,
Ik wull geern weten, of een mang Ju de Afkumst vun twee Seggwiesen
weett, een neddersassische (nedderdüütsche) un een ingelsche, beid' mit dat
Woord "Mann," beid' bi 't Hoog-Upkieken uutrapen, und beid' womööglich uut
de Seefahrt.
De neddersassische Seggwies' is "Mann in de Tünn!"
De ingelsche Seggwies' is _Man alive!_ ("Mann lebennig!")
Wat för Geschichten steekt daar achter?
Gifft dat in annere Spraken lieke Seggwiesen?
In 't Vöruut bedankt.
Gröten,
Reinhard/Ron
Dear Lowlanders,
I would like to know if any of you know the origins of two expressions,
one Low Saxon (Low German) and one English, both of them using the word
"man," both of them expressing surprise, and both of them possibly
originating from nautical jargon.
The Low Saxon expression is _Mann in de Tünn!_ ['ma%n ?Ine 't`Y%n] ("Man
in the barrel!")
The English expression is "Man alive!"
What are the stories behind these?
Are there similar expressions in other languages?
Thanks in anticipation.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
