Dear Lowlanders,

Sorry about the technical problem in the last issue under this subject title.

In the meantime Klaas Romkes of the Dialectkring Urk sent me some more
information about the dialect of Urk:

"Het eiland Urk is eigendom van de stad Amsterdam geweest in verband met de
waarde van het eiland voor de nautische veiligheid van deze stad. Er stond
een vuurbaak (en later vuurtoren) op het eiland ten behoeve van het
scheepsverkeer van en naar de stad Amsterdam. Deze band met Amsterdam had
tot gevolg, dat in het Urker dialect als gesproken wordt over De Stad, men
Amsterdam bedoelt. Voorbeeld: "Ik leg vor De Stad mit mankierige an de
metor." vertaling: "Ik lig in Amsterdam met een kapotte motor."
Dat er Joodse en Amsterdamse woorden in het Urker dialect opgenomen zijn,
komt m.i. eerder door het feit, dat heel veel (soms heel jonge) meisjes in
vroeger dagen in Noordholland, maar vooral ook in Amsterdam (bij Joodse
families) gingen 'dienen'. Oftewel in de huishouding werkten. Ze kwamen dan
een of twee keer thuis per jaar (met Pasen en Pinksteren).
Het lijkt aannemelijk dat zij wel een paar woordjes oppikten..."

For those of you who are interested but do not understand (enough) Dutch, here
my translation:

"Due to its importance in the maritime defense of the city, the island of Urk
used to belong to Amsterdam. There used to be a beacon (and later lighthouse)
on the island for the benefit of ships entering and leaving the city of
Amsterdam. As a result of this connection with Amsterdam, using the local
dialect you say _De Stad_ ("The City") in reference to Amsterdam. Example: _Ik
leg vor De Stad mit mankierige an de metor_ 'I'm moored in Amsterdam with a
defective motor'. Jewish [= Yiddish] and Amsterdam dialect words entered the
Urk dialect in part because in earlier times many (often very young) girls
used to go "serve," usually as household personnel, Jewish families in
Northern Holland, particularly in Amsterdam. They would return home for visits
twice a year (on Easter and Whitsunday). They are likely to have picked up
some words [of Yiddish and Amsterdam dialect] ..."
