HCJB WORLD RADIO TO AIR PLAUTDIETSCH PROGRAMS VIA SHORTWAVE
1/31/2002 3:14:21 PM
The 400,000 speakers of Plautdietsch, a form of Low German spoken primarily by
Mennonite groups scattered around the world, will be able to hear Christian
broadcasts in their mother tongue starting Saturday, Feb. 2, when HCJB World
Radio begins airing programs in this language.
Praise God for the German Language Services vision and desire to reach this
group of people that can be very closed, says Curt Cole, HCJB World Radios
international radio director.
Programs in Plautdietsch, a language distinct from regular German, will air 30
minutes weekly via shortwave from Quito with releases going to South America,
North/Central America and Europe. Programs will also be available to listeners
across Europe via the EuroMax satellite network. This us the first time HCJB
World Radio will air programs in this language.
Primary targets are traditional Mennonite colonies in Mexico, Paraguay,
Bolivia, Brazil and Belize. However, about 100,000 speakers also live in
Russia and Kazakhstan with another 100,000 in Canada, 90,000 in Germany and
additional pockets of speakers in the U.S., Uruguay, Argentina and Costa Rica.
Program producers Hermann Schirmacher and Emmi Salmon in Quito say the
programs will feature preaching as well as a mailbag program to answer
listeners questions. Plautdietsch is one of 13 languages being broadcast from
HCJB World Radios international facilities in Ecuador. Including ministries
with local partners worldwide, HCJB World Radio broadcasts the gospel in more
than 100 languages in more than 100 countries.
