My understanding has always been that it's from Middle Norse-French
'houguimaine' (or some spelling quite close to that) meaning a wee
gift given at the New Year.

_Concise Oxford Dictionary_:
"... [17th c., corresp. in sense and use to OF {Old French}
_aguillanneuf_, of unknown orig.; the Norma form _hoguinané_ may have
been the immediate source]"
Might the Old French form have been derived from a Celtic (assumedly
Gaulic) word?
