Beste Lieëglanners,
I would truly like to know how you call the following "creatures" in
your local dialect :
1) a frog (Ranidae)
2) a toad (Bufonidae)
3) a specimen of an animal (or a human being) that is underdeveloped
in its size (remaining dwarf-like)
4) a lizard (Sauria)
5) a HAG (witch)
6) an old woman (pejorative meaning)
Here goes my own contribution (Western Brabant) :
1) ne vös (~ vorsch (D))
2) een parre (~ padde (D))
3) ne kröte (~ kröte (G))
4) een slangeratits (< slange-artis < slange-HAGetisse)
5) een éks (~ heks (D))
6) een kween (~ queen (E))
Apart from number 6), I have the impression that these words are
intertwined, a toad and a lizard standing for evil women
(respectively fat and vicious ones). Furthermore, the sense of the word
"kröte" might have shifted, finally denoting a gnome.
Our "varende vrouw" (bàànnde vraa) or "walriderske" is never far away
here apparently *s*...

PS : We use the word "kantn" where Western Flemish would be "stutn"
(slices of bread).

negative meaning, unless used in historical contexts. _Pastüür_ ~
_Postüür_ is a usually derogatory word for 'woman', often with the
connotation of 'silly', not unlike oldfashioned German _Frauenzimmer_.)
You could use adjectives like _gresig_ ['gre:zIC] ~ ['grE:zIC]
'awful' with 6.
Note: _Queen_, _Quä(ä)n_, _Kween_, _Kwä(ä)n_ 'young female bovine',
'female calf'!
