Subject: Mennonite linguist heritage
Ron recently wrote: "Plautdietsch (i.e. Mennonite Low Saxon) represents the
otherwise extinct West Prussian subgroup that belongs to the Eastern Low
Saxon (eastern Low German) dialect group.
I am not a linguist, but the above is my linguistic heritage, and I am
interested in knowing whether this heritage might be shown graphically.
Who could better express it than a group of professional linguists such as
the membership of Lowlands-L?
Beginning with the Proto-Indo-European languages, I am wondering whether
someone would be willing to help me in displaying it (in as much detail as
necessary, either in a time-line or an otherwise graphic arrangement) the
relevant steps, culminating with Plautdietsch, the Mennonite Low Saxon
dialect.
In my past experience we have often called it "Netherlandic-Mennonite
Plautdietsch," and I'm wondering also whether that is a proper name for it,
as well as "Mennonite Low Saxon."
Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.
