Also in Dutch: Verzuipen = drown (both transitive and intransitive),
also figurative, meaning "misuse wages (formerly often distributed
in pub) to buy booze", "het loon verzuipen".

(Te veel) zuipen = (heavily) drink alcoholic beverages.

All of these word have a pejorative or colloquial register in Dutch.

Same thing in both Lowlands Saxon (Low German, parenthesized versions in
Netherlands spelling) and ("High") German:

LS: versupen (verzoepn) [f3`'zu:p=m] (p.part. versapen
   (verzaopn) [f3`'zQ:p=m])
G: versaufen (p.part. versoffen)

Both can also mean 'to spend one's money or property on drink'; e.g.,

LS: He hett Huus un Hoff versapen.
   (Hei het hoes oen hof verzaopn.)
G: Er hat Haus und Hof versoffen.
'He lost his ("house and farm") entire estate on account of his drinking.'

Or to lose one's mind (_Verstand_ 'sense') on account of booze:

LS: He hett sien Verstand versapen.
   (Hei het zien verstaand verzaopn.)
G: Er hat seinen Verstand versoffen
'He's drunk himself silly.' 'He lost his mind boozing.'

You can also apply this to someone's looks:

LS: Se süht bannig versapen ut.
   (Zei zuut bannig verzaopn oet.) ~
   Se lett bannig versapen.
   (Zei let bannig verzaopn.)
G: Sie sieht ziemlich versoffen aus.
'She looks pretty much alkied/boozed out.'

Or to one's behavior or demeanor:

LS: Dat sünd heel versapene Lüüd'.
(Dat zund heil verzaopene lu(ud).)
G: Sie sind ganz versoffene Leute/Typen.
'They are real boozers.'

As most of you probably know, the prefix _ver-_ tends to add on the meaning
'away' or 'in excess'.

_Zuipen_, _supen_ and _saufen_ are cognates of English "to sup" and Scots
_tae sowp_ (< Germanic *_sup-_, Old French _soper_ ~ _super_), also related
to English "sip" and "to sip".
