Subject: Phonology

Hi all

regarding pronunciations of 'wh' - I tend to agree
with Dan where he says 'I've very really heard /hw/
pronounced in England except by slightly
uppety RP speaker and then only by few.' To me it
sounds affected. J.C.Wells in his book 'Accents of
English 1' makes the comment on p126 that 'The cluster
/hw/ remains a possibility for many Americans, as in
white /hwaIt/, which /hwItS/. In RP this survives only
as artificial pronunciations; the usual forms have
plain /w/, thus /waIt/, /wItS/'

I don't think it survived in the development of any of
the other Lowland languages apart from Scots, where
it's standard. It's also survived with various further
developments i.e. to /kv/,/xv/ or /hv/ etc. in
Icelandic, Faroese and dialects of Norwegian and
Nynorsk.

Gary
