>From the point of view of Eastern Friesland Low Saxon there is no need felt
for replacement of the _p_ in "Aprikose" by _pf_ as Ron reported it. We tend
to say "apperkôs" which looks much like the Afrikaans word. This form is to
be explained by the handling of the _pri_ sound cluster which in this place
for some reason I cannot actually explain sounds strange for EFLS speakers.

Holger,

My point was that we would replace the /p/ with /pf/ in the *German* (i.e.,
"High German") word _Aprikose_, because we (or someone before us) felt that
_Aprikose_ was faulty German, namely Lowlands-Saxon-influenced German,
because LS /p/ tends to correspond to German /pf/.  This is an example of
overcompensation by speakers of Lowlands Saxon (Low German) or their
descendants when trying to speak "good" German.

By the way, I think _Appelkoos'_ is used outside Eastern Friesland as well.
It could well be that _Apfrikosen_ came from German _Aprikosen_ contaminated
by LS _Appelkosen_, which, if it existed would be something like
_Apfelkosen_ in German.  (LS _Appel_ = G _Apfel_ 'appel').
