Hello Ron !
I didn't doubt Your words. I did understand it as an example of
overcompensation. I only wanted to show that here in Eastern Friesland the
reception of this word went an other way.

Sorry Ron, it is "apperkôs" not "appelkoos" like in Afrikaans. Speakers
don't feel any connection with "appel".

Dear all,
I have a little story to add, about children with a LL language
instinctively applying the second ("High German") consonant shift when
attempting to speak German. A couple of years ago I was riding the bus
up Maxingstraße in Vienna, a very posh area where all the ambassadors
have their residences, and I overheard a conversation of, say 8-10 year
old, school children going home from school. One of the boys was the son
of someone in the American emassy with his au-pair-nanny - I figured
this, because my neighbour`s kid was school mate of his. I also knew
that his German was very poor when he joined the class that year and my
neighbour`s kid was the only one in class who spoke English (the family
is of Indian origine) so he took care of him. The boy must have learnt
German incredibly fast because no more than 5 or 6 months had elapsed
when I heard following conversation in the bus:

Some kid asked him:
"Teddy, wann steigst du aus?"   and he answered:
"Beim nächsten Busstopf"

My ears almost dropped off - I was delighted - and adopted "Busstopf"
into my active vocabulary - I thought that was great!
