Whatever you mean by a "Saxon".  If he was a native of Northumbria, his
language was the parent to modern day Scots.  Don't know if the Scots would
consider him to be a Sassenach.   In any event, probably his language and
Frisian and many other dialects on the North Sea coast were probably still
fairly mutually intelligible.  My late Frisian informant could read
Beowulf.  If you don't know what a Sassenach is, go to
