Archeologen vinden in Zele resten van eerste Germaanse "immigranten"
In Zele bij Dendermonde hebben archeologen resten gevonden die erop wijzen
dat in de 3de eeuw na Christus in het huidige Vlaanderen ook Friezen hebben
gewoond. Wat vandaag Vlaanderen heet, stond toen onder Romeins gezag, maar
Germaanse stammen zouden het gauw onder de voet lopen.
De resten werden aangetroffen in een oude afvalput van een Romeinse
nederzetting.
De vondsten bewijzen dat Friezen in de tweede helft van de derde eeuw, na
zelf verdreven te zijn uit hun woongebied aan de Noordzeekust, hun toevlucht
hebben gezocht in Vlaams Scheldegebied. "De Friezen zijn vertrokken uit hun
woongebied omdat het er te nat werd", zegt De Clercq. "In feite waren het
een soort economische vluchtelingen. En ze hebben zich nadien honderden
kilometers verder, bij ons dus, gevestigd".

It's not clear to me from this text on what ground they identified what they
found as Frisian, rather than Franconian.
