This one has always been close to my heart, especially since my oldest
daughter is named Marleen like the girl in the story. I have never read a
more poetic description of the mixed feelings and anxieties of a pregnant
woman, and then later of the mental struggle of the stepmother who just
cannot bring herself to like the older child. I'm especially fond of the
line, "so reet ehr de Böse, bratsch!". That says it all, no need for more
words!!

And the tale is in Low Saxon! I thought that the Grimm brothers wrote in
High German?

Uilleam, the Grimm Brothers' collection of tales (supposedly gathered on a
long field trip through many parts of Germany) includes a number of stories
in non-standard German dialects and in Lowlands Saxon (Low German), also in
a number of dialects, some of them now archaic or extinct.  The LS ones are
published in German translation in all but purists' editions, certainly in
editions targeting German-speaking children.

I provided a list of the LS ones two years ago.  It may not be complete.
