      This year, the "Gillhoff-Literaturpreis für Verdienste um die
plattdeutsche Sprache" (Gillhoff Prize for Achievements on Behalf of
the Low German Language) will be awarded to Joachim (Yogi) Reppmann
(Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and Northfield, Minnesota,
USA; yogi at moin-moin.com) for a book he put together in English,
German and Low Saxon/Low German with Stuart Gorman (St. Paul,
Minnesota, USA): _Low German : Platt in America_ (Hesparian Press :
Verlag für Amerikanistik, 9,80 EUR + shipping, with an introduction
by the North-German-American actor Eric Braeden, né Hans Gudegast

     On behalf of Lowlands-L, I congratulate Dr. Reppmann on the book and
on the prize. Yogi, my friend Jürgen Hebold, myself and a lot of
folks on Lowlands-L have one thing in common: we look across the
garden fence -- we wish to make known that our language is not only
used in Northern Germany, and we wish to bring its speakers and
writers in various countries together.
     This year, the prize ceremony will take place on June 4, in Glaisin,
Mecklenburg, Germany, not very distant from Ludwigslust, Schwerin and
Hamburg. I have posted a PDF-brochure on the Web
(http://sassisch.net/rhahn/low-saxon/Gillhoff.pdf). I hope you'll
take a look at it and will try to be there.
     Yogi has invited me to the event and has asked me to make a speech as
a guest of honor. It's a great honor, indeed. I'd love to accept, but
I'm not yet sure if this is possible, since I am currently commuting
back and forth between Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area and
hope to move to California for good this year. Nevertheless, I'll do
my best.
