"Columbus's Cathayans (Chinese) must certainly have been Inuit, who
had similar Asian features."

This pre-supposes that he knew what a "Cathayan" looked like in the first 
place.  Remember, we are talking about a man who thought the people of the 
Caribbean were "Indians".  Chris may have been a great sailor, but let's 
face it, as an ethnologist, he sucked.

This was, after all, a time when some Europeans still thought that "Tartars" 
had horses heads!
