Subject: Anniversary

Folks,

Our Elsie has kindly graced our Anniversary site
(http://www.lowlands-l.net/anniversary/) with a second Afrikaans translation
(under "Language Samples"): Garib Afrikaans, also known as Orange River
Afrikaans or Griqua Afrikaans.  It's interesting to compare the two
Afrikaans versions. Baie dankie, Elsie, for this and all other help!

This is a real treat. There are some really lovely forms in the latest
version, such as _bangmaakding_ ("afraid-make-thing") for "bogeyman" or
"monster" (standard _paaiboelie_), and _vebygekomloep_
("past-come-run/walk") for "came (walking) by" (standard _verbygekom_).
Note also that rounded high front vowels have become unrounded (e.g., _trug_
= _trig_ 'back(ward)', _hulle_ = _hille_ 'their').  Note also the
"non-rhotic" phonology (i.e., syllable-final /r/ is "dropped"), at least
after /a/.  (Should _maanhaar_ then not be *_maanhaa_?)

I wrote the language discriptions to the best of my ability.  Please let me
know (sassisch at yahoo.com) if there are any errors.

Whenever we get the sound file project back off the ground there will be a
recording of each of the Afrikaans versions (and of several other
translations as well), also thanks to our Elsie.

By the way, this anniversay project is not over.  Keep at it, folks!  Send
