Dear John and Ron,

as I just remember my grandma (coming from Stade, near Hamburg, grewn up
with LS) used to call us, her grandchildren _Putschie_ with pet name.
Another variation of LS/D(?)/Missingsch 'Buttje', E/S 'budgie',  or could it
even derive from French 'petit'?

BTW: in our local dialect a beggar, a tramp also is called a 'Buttje', in a
friendly, positive way.

And I just saw, that E: 'butt' in 'Langenscheid Dictionary' is (among
others) translated as G: 'Zielscheibe' ('target disc')- could be an
indication to its shape.

In addition to my last:

Old Frisian has _buttken_, _buttien_, G: 'kleine Münze', E: 'small coin'.

I guess the circle to be closed: 'flat fish' >> 'target (disc)' >> 'a
(small, worthless) coin going from hand to hand' >> 'a (little) tramp' and
'a (little) bird', both 'fluttering around'.

Ha!

(Man- ick weyt nu all, keyn door weller wat an rym tou grummeln hett ;-)!)
