Subject: Jandaddel

Moin tosamen,

ik hebb jüst mit mien Fru över "Jandaddel" snackt. Op und Hochtied harr mien
Mudder mien Familie vörstellt. Mien Tante (mien Modder ehr Schwägerin) weer
ok dor. Mien Onkel (mien Modder ehr Broder) weer al vele Johrenden
doodbleven
und mien Tante weer mit ehr Fründ dor. Un dor hett mien Modder em as mien
Tante ehr Jandaddel vörstellt. Dat is nu üm un bi 8 Jahr her. In de
Twischentiet hett mien Tante ehrn "Jandaddel" ok heirat.

Heiko

Tjer, dat kümt daar vun, dat dat 'n naam wesen schal un as twey woyrd'
schreven wardt: "Jan Daddel" or "Jan Dattel".

Dat is nu so 'n algemeyn-naam vör "boyfriend" -- sachs as 'n "geneerschen"
naam an-vungen, so wat as "Jan Sounso" ...

Ik glouv' stark, düt "Daddel" or "Dattel" kümt vun _daddeln_ ~ _datteln_ af
('to fool around', 'to play around', ook _rümdaddeln_ ~ _rümdatteln_). Ik
weet nich of dat verwandt is mit _daddeldu_ ~ _datteldu_ [da=l"du:] in d'n
schargong vun de varens-luyd' -- dat beduydt 'daan!' or 'fardig!' (Hamborger
Missingsch "Fädich issie Laube"), Duytsch "erledigt!", "Das war's", "Das ist
erstmal genug", un 't kümt vun Ingelsch "that'll do" af.

Myn teory is dat dat mit "Jan Daddeldu" anners an-vungen har, so wat as
"John ... well, that'll do" ... villicht gaar bruukt as "john" up Ingelsch
... 'n kund vun so 'n ... nu ja, weetst al ... perfeschonelle daam in Sankt
Pauli. Dat beduyden is den sachs "Naams wardt hyr nich bruukt, is allens
annonuym." Ik hev dat al in dennen sin hoyrd (t.b. "Na Schultes gaat tou
meyrst nutten mit jüm er Jan Dattels hin supen.")

Folks,

Our Heiko asked about the Low Saxon term _Jandaddel_ with the general
meaning "boyfriend" or "beau." He said that he couldn't find any
information about it on the web. I suggested that this is because it is
really a name and ought to be written as two words: "Jan Daddel" or "Jan
Dattel" (_Jan_ being "John"). Furthermore, I explained that I believed
_Daddel_ or _Dattel_ to be derived from the verb _(rüm)daddeln_ ~
_(rüm)datteln_ 'to fool around', 'to muck about'. It may also be related to
the nautical expression _daddeldu_ ~ _datteldu_ [da=l"du:], meaning 'that's
all', 'that's it for now', derived from English "that'll do." In that case,
this _Daddel_ ~ _Dattel_ would stand for something like "So-and-So" -- "her
... John ... That'll do" (no names here please!). I suspect that before
"boyfriend" it had the meaning "john," namely the client of a prostitute,
and in Hamburg's "classical" era these were mostly sailors who would indeed
use the expression _daddeldu_ and introduce it to the local _Landratten_
("land rats"). In fact, I have heard it used in this sense, much like "The
bar is frequented by working girls and their 'boyfriends'/johns."

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
