There's no further enlightenment in this book. You could read this:
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~kellym/homonym.html which is the best I could
manage by googling.
However, be careful when you launch into it from our discussion, because
it's not just about orthography! Although it starts by talking about
homonymous words causing comprehension problems, this seems to me to
mean homonyms in speech. Later on it mentions heterographic homonyms as
being a disambiguating factor in reading.
