  Lowlanders,

  In 1997, I (and perhaps other Lowlanders) helped Craig Ostrander with a
  "Germanic Phrasebook."
This looks like a great phrasebook.  A quick look through prompted a 
thought; the phrase "Hoe gaan dit?", "Wie geht's?" etc. is rendered in 
English as "How are you?".  But many English speakers actually use the 
phrase "how's it going?" or even "how goes it?".  My father (from 
Leicestershire) regularly used the latter, unaware as far as I know that it 
is almost a literal translation of Dutch or German. I recall the usual South 
African English greeting is "howzit?"

I wonder how many other usual English phrases are actually closer to their 
Germanic relatives than the Standard form might suggest.
