Subject: Language varieties

Folks,

Brace yourselves for an extraordinary treat of high culture if you
understand German, for I won't dare do a translation!

When we started talking about VOS structure and I said that it was also
used in certain styles in German and Low Saxon, immediately what came to
mind was a verse my maternal grandmother (from Lower Silesia, of Sorbian
descent) used to "delight" us kids with -- much to my mother's dismay (who
had been taught it when she was a child and told me it must be just about
the most ridiculous rhyme ever created -- _einfach zu blöd!_).

Here it is (* = VS constructions):

   Wa emal e Mann,*
   De hieß Bimbam.
   Bimbam hieß e.*
   Lange Fuzze ließ e.*
   Ging e in de Kelle,*
   Schiss uf alle Telle.
   Ging e uf de Bode,*
   Kämmte sich die Lode,
   Hing [sic.] de Asch zum Fenste raus.
   Meinte die Mensche, es sei e Spiegel.
   Dabei wa's bloß e Schweineigel.

This appears to be based on a counting rhyme:

   Es wa emal e Mann,
   de hieß Bimbam,
   Bimbam hieß e,
   in de Drumbede blies e
   (~ große Fuzze ließ e,
   kleine gab e zu, raus bist du).

So much for high culture for today.
