This is a handy little overview of the longstanding Belgian language conflict,
its origins and its ramifications. While this account does not appear to be
entirely bias-free, it is a must-read for anyone interested in the history not
only of Belgium but also of the entire Low-Franconian-speaking world,
particularly of the tenuous and tense relationships between Belgians and
Netherlanders on the one hand and between "Flemish" and "French" Begians on the
other hand.

This is a handy book telling the story of a large part of French Flanders through
its place names. Place names tend to be useful witnesses of historical events,
and this is all the more fascinating in areas in which language varieties meet,
overlap and come to constitute layers of ethnic and political hierarchies and
changes. Poulet manages to present this in an academically researched and
typologically structured and at the same time "chatty" and entertaining manner
which makes the work easily accessible to all that are interested. We encounter
many a place name whose Flemish past has come to be colored by Picard and French
overlays, and each one provides a glimpse into an interesting political,
cultural, ethnic and linguistic history having taken place just across the
Channel from the White Cliffs of Dover. Historical photographs add considerable
interest.
