I should perhaps say in my defense, that the average New Zealander didn't
think of themselves as Pacific Islanders at the time. I read an article by
a
Maori contributor to the Nuclear-Free debate, saying that Pakeha New
Zealanders - New Zealanders of European descent - were now Pacific
Islanders,
since New Zealand was rather plainly an island in the Pacific, and they
should get used to it.
I think you're confusing two different things here - one is the exclusionary
identity - "we are [such-and-such--positive] and anyone else is
[so-and-so--negative]" - the other is the basic statement of identity - "we
are [this] and don't mind that you are [that]".
The exclusionary identity thing is what drives xenophobia, and such; I don't
condone it. But keeping to the simple statement of identity - particularly
in a situation where some people are making it sound divisive - can help
clear the air. It just requires keeping a level head.
FWIW, that's my view on this matter.
