Hi all,
Ron, Google tells me that you have in the US a not for profit organization
called International Trademark Organization (INTA) www.inta.org. Perhaps
they could provide more specific information, in terms of Online fora such
as ours? The US Patent and Trademark Org (USPTO) could also be contacted
about protecting one's Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights.
Then there is a World Intellectual Property Organization
http://www.wipo.int/portal/index.html.en (WIPO) that provides support,
protection and enforcement.
I think it is a good idea to be a member of a professional organization to
provide one with that sort of legal clout.
Last year I saw an unfortunate incident where someone basically copied
someone else's writing relating to a research project and published the
information in an occupational health journal as if it was her writing.
Fortunately, the originator of the article had the authority of an ethical
committee of a prestigious medical school behind her and the plagiarist had
to publicly apologize in the journal.
Regards,
Elsie Zinsser

Thanks a lot, Elsie.
"Restrictions" don't sound good to me, at this point at least. It's probably
best to keep things somewhat open for now.
However, I am always open to any suggestion that provides a measure of
protection or stability and "legitimizes" our educational efforts.
Also, I've had experiences with people stealing my writing, displaying it at
their (university!) sites as though they were theirs, and ignoring me when I
challenged them. In one case something finally happened, albeit slowly,
after I wrote to the legal department and the president of the Italian
university. Apparently, people believe that political borders protect them
and that few people would go to the trouble of taking legal action.
Sorry I can't be more specific because it's just a jumble of nebulous
notions in my little head right now, and I'm merely exploring in a
groping-in-the-dark fashion.
You're probably right when you say benchmarking or trademarking of specific
publications might be reasonable. (I don't even know the difference.) Also,
I've tossed around ideas about a publication series for the future, but that
would be a different ball game, I guess.
At any rate, let it be known that I am always open to relevant suggestions
from you legal and procedural minds out there. I know that I can always
count on you, Elsie, for support and advice, which you know is always much
appreciated even if I don't mention it every time over many years.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

Thanks again, Elsie.
I'll check out the said sites when I get some time, and I hope I'll be able
to wrap my mind around some of that legalese.
Cheers!
Reinhard/Ron
