I moved to Austin in 1978.  I was working for the telephone company in
Dallas as a service representative.  Those were the people that took orders
for new phone service among other things.  I transferred to Austin and they
sat me down at a desk with a phone and I started taking calls from the first
moment.  I had no forewarning about the "unusual" pronunciation of the local
street names.  Let me tell ya, it took quite some time to get it all
straight.

Then there is that little town to east of Austin called Elgin.  And that
would be a hard "g" as we used to call it in school.  I eventually caught
on, but not until I lost all confidence in the way to say things 'round
these parts.
