Was it a German punishment .. back in the 19th century? Or even more
recently?
Has anyone heard of it ( or suffered it) in the UK?
Not as draconian but even in the 1940's a common punishment for UK children
caught lying or swearing was washing their
mouths out with soap.

I've never heard of it outside this particular context and assume it's an
aberration. This is not to say that such things would have been totally
unheard of in medieval times when corporal punishment was forever seeking
new boundaries all over Europe.

Reinhard/Ron
