Ron/Reinhard wrote 'Apparently this referred to the sweet reddish brown type
of resin . Some allege that the word goes back to Sanskrit *lakṣa* लक्ष
'hundred thousand' in reference to the multitudes of insects that tease the
resin out of trees.

Could the OHG lah which gave Lache = Grenzmarken Holz oder Stein lachen
= to score / scratch into bark / stone and Lachbaum / Lachstein be
connected here?

Heh! Nice one, Heather! In actual fact, I think you may be onto something
here.

I did some more research and found that we may be talking about two
different Sanskrit words here, or about one. I'm not sure.

   - लाक्षा *lākṣā* 'dye', 'lac (obtained from the cochineal or a similar
insect as well as from the resin of the Ludh tree)'
   - लक्ष् *lakṣ-* 'to see', 'to observe', 'to perceive', 'to recognize',
'to know', 'to notice', 'to characterize', 'to mark', 'to define', 'to
indicate', 'to direct', 'to aim', 'to be marked'
   - लक्षक *lakṣaka* 'indicating', 'hinting'
   - लक्षक *lakṣaka* 'hundred thousand'
   - लक्ष *lakṣa* 'mark', 'sign', 'token'
   - लक्षण *lakṣaṇa* 'mark', 'sign', 'symbol', 'token', 'characteristic',
'attribute', 'quality', 'form', 'species', 'kind', 'sort', 'aim', 'goal',
   'scope', 'object', 'observation', 'sight'
   - लाक्षण *l**ā**kṣaṇa* 'relating to or acquainted with characteristic
   signs or marks'
   - लक्षणक *l**a**kṣaṇa* 'mark', 'sign'
   - लक्षणसंनिवेज़ *lak**ṣaṇ**asaṃniveza* 'the impression of a mark',
   'branding', 'stigmatizing'
   - लक्ष्मन् *lakṣman* 'mark', 'sign', 'symbol', 'token',
   'characteristic'
   - लक्ष्मी *lakṣmī* 'mark', 'sign', 'symbol', 'token', 'sight',
'beauty', 'loveliness', 'grace', 'charm', 'splendor', 'luster' -- also the
name of the deity of fortune and beauty

And there are many, many more.

We need to ascertain the correspondences of Sanskrit क्ष *kṣ* in Europe. If
there is the said connection, then there ought to be one with *ch* in the
German group and one with *k* or *kk* in the Lowlands.

What is the origin of Low Saxon *lakmayern* (*lackmeiern*) 'to fool', 'to
deceive'?

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
