Subject: Etymology
Dear Lowlanders,
While it's rather quiet here for a change, let me ask you an etymological
question.
One of several Low Saxon words (intransitive verb) for 'to work hard' is *
marachen* (IPA [maˈraxŋ], SAMPA [ma'raxN=]) (stem: *marach-*). Does any of
you have any idea about its possible origin?
I am assuming that it is unrelated to the (especially Ruhr and Berlin)
German noun *Maloche* (IPA [maˈloːxə], SAMPA [ma'lo:x@]) 'hard work', 'hard
labor', which, via Rotwelsch and Yiddish מלאכה *melokhe* 'work', 'trade',
goes back to Hebrew מְלָאכָה *mĕlā'xāh* 'labor', 'work'.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
