Hi Kevin,

I wonder if French "aussi" (also) is connected. And, as someone else
already asked, could the Russian conjunction "a" (and, but) be as well?

Kevin Caldwell

French *aussi* was *alsi* in Ancient French. This is a contraction of Vulgar
Latin **alid* (for *aliud, *which meant 'something else') and *sic*, 'such,
this way'. Cf. 'aussi ... que', where 'aussi' means 'as', and where it has
no semantic link with 'also'. Although "also" does :-) (are you still with
me?)

According to Chernyh (2002), Russian *a* derives from an Indo-European root
**od, *and according to Derksen from (h1)o:d. Chernyh sees the word as the
later genitive suffix in Slavonic: *-ego*

Best regards,

Marcel.
