Subject: LL-L "Location Names"

Beste Nederlanders van dat Vereenigte Koningrijk,

(English summary below)

Flevoland.

Dat is joa woll eyn intersant' Dörp.

Is in oule Tijden eyn Insel ween un' hett bit vandaog siin heyl eygen
Charakter 'woart.

Is ouk joa eyn gediegen
Wourd - "Urk".
heyt in (EF)LS "Auerk".

*(English summary)*

Dear etc,

today I happened to come across the website of "Urk" http://www.urk.nl/ in
the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. An interesting village!

It had been an island in ancient time and kept its individual character
until our days.

Is there anyone among you coming from there? I'd like to know some more
facts about it. In a certain way it reminds me at the Saterland (Scharrel),
where people still speak the very special dialect of
Seeltersk/Sater-Frisian. Has Urk a special dialect of its own, too?

Further: the inhabitants don't know the origin of the name. I have to agree-
a very strange word, this "Urk". But in Eastern Friesland we know the
town "Aurich", which is "Auerk" in EFLS dialect. They could linguistically
be related, don't you think so?

Going on with the historical background: nearly unbelievable that it did
belong to the arch-bisdom of Cologne! Starting at the East-Side of the Weser
river in nowadays Germany reaching to the Province of Holland! And the
eastern rest of Germanic settlements on the European continent belonged to
the Arch-Bisdom of Mainz.

Allerbest!

Jonny Meibohm
