alley that connects two streets. I assume that the word is thus best
translated as "close" within Scottish contexts."
As in "twitten" [not sure about spelling as I've only heard it being said ]
- which my mother used as a young girl in Norfolk for a small (covered) way
between houses usually leading to houses in a courtyard at the back.
Worcester still has a number of these in its one remaining medieval street ,
as does Tewkesbury. In Worcester they are usually known as XXX Alley ; not
sure of the Tewkesbury term.
