I have a vague recall that 'garden' is the wrong part of the original
word/phrase. Originally 'hortus' was the garden bit and when it was enclosed
by walls became a hortus gardinus ( or something like that - sorry! no
etymological dictionary to hand). The hortus got dropped ( except in the
horticultural word family) and garden became the accepted word for the patch
of cultivated ground. Its original meaning is still kept by cognates such as
'grad' as in Petrograd etc where it indicates the walls around the town.
