Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2008.01.08 (02) [E]
A colleague mentioned today that in the Middlesborough area, where she's
from, they commonly use the word "snagger" for a turnip. It arose because
apparently people named Turner typically get called Snagger by association.
Another Northeasterner (from Durham) had never heard the word. A search for
dialectial words came up with "snagger", "snadger", "snadgie", "snaggie" and
other variants, all Northern English.
Any Lowlanders know of a similar word in any other languages?
Paul Finlow-Bates
