Yes, Paul, very ironic.

And it goes both ways; one of my cousins failed her matriculation exam
because she struggled to pass the English language paper, which was a
prerequisite in the late '60s. (This was in the rural northern-western Cape
where English was very rarely heard, let alone studied :-)

Meanwhile, good news; the Legal Libraries submission form of the SA National
Library Services has been changed.

Similar problems exists in [north] India within the movement to
reinsert/renovate Hindi as an lingua franca alternative to English.

 I can never really understand why people actually want their language to
become a lingua franca.  A bit of imperialist pride? general laziness (don't
need to learn a new language when I travel)? It actually diminishes the
identity of the "home" nation. I appreciate the value of an international
language; I just often wish it was somebody else's!
